To whom it may concern:

I'm writing to say how disappointed I am with the selection of smartphones offered by Verizon.

I don't want a BlackBerry and I'm resigned to suffering through life without an iPhone, but your company has made it very hard to get excited about any of the phones currently available.

I work in the online news industry and I don't want to have a phone that I'm embarrassed to be talking on. Can you please find a way to incorporate cool phones into your lineup? That might mean hiring a few teenagers or twenty-something geeks to tell you what's cool. It might mean stepping outside of your business model to take a chance. It might mean hiring new consultants. Whatever it takes, please do it--I don't want to own a dad phone.

Please offer something that I'll be proud to own and stop focusing on BlackBerries. They're ugly, hard to use and the opposite of fun. I don't want to date people with BlackBerries.*

My contract is up in two months and I'm drastically underwhelmed by what's available. Please get your act together and call me when you get something shiny and new that is not a RIM-job.

I want android, nokia and HTC (not the Touch Pro -- you guys neutered that beyond repair).

I'll do whatever it takes to help you get there. If you're ever in need of feedback, please let me know.

The New York Times Magazine is the best perk about my job

I'm a few days late and definitely dollars short, but a few things about this week's The New York Times Magazine:

#1 - Props to Roger Cohen for using the words "Blogostroika" and "gerontocracy." Furthermore, props to Roger Cohen for using those two words in the same sentence.

"Here, I thought, is Cuba’s future, a Blogostroika, if only the repressive gerontocracy would let it bloom; a Blogostroika that will fill that sea with bright vessels."

#2 - That's some mighty fine use of Helvetica on the cover. It reminds me of that movie all about the font, and how people argue that the typeface has a socialist flavor to it. I wonder if the cover designer had those intentions. Here, the weight works really well with the proportions of the photo. And the color on the black and white makes me thirsty for a tequila sunrise. I looked into downloading Helvetica last week. It costs $27.

#3 - As an employee of a struggling newspaper, Virginia Heffernan's bit about the media's misguided efforts resonated with me. My boss asked me why--she read my resonance face as one of surprise (By golly, this Heffernan lady's on to something!). But I tried explaining that it's like reading a self-help book. You crack the spine, scan to the section about your affliction and find passages that describe your troubles in perfect, intimate detail. You're not surprised by any of it, but it's so vivid and so accurate that you wonder how the passage came to exist without you as the author. You keep reading out of a self-absorbed wonder, convinced you've found the most illuminating paragraphs ever written. But the thing is: you've known it all along, but when someone else puts it to paper, it's got weight.

That's how I feel about my company's predicament. I know we're fucked and I know exactly why the newspaper industry is fucked, but Heffernan so precisely describes the task at hand, that it all feels like I'm tasting disappointment for the very first time. Thank you, Virginia Heffernan for making me feel terrible all over again.

#4 - "In Defense of Teasing" is a great headline. However, it's a little bizarre that the author finds it necessary to explain, "(harsh teasing about obesity can damage a child's sense of self for years)..." --Yeah, no kidding. I would hope readers interested in this content know enough not to be told that teasing fat kids can impart life-long paranoia. I was distracted after reading such wisdom. I couldn't finish his story.

Great read all around. I might add more to this post.

Charlotte Pitton gives moms a bad name

Behold the dumbest woman I've seen in a while: Charlotte Pitton.

This lady allowed and encouraged her 3-year-old daughter to pose against a fence overlooking a cliff. The girl does what every toddler does and leans into the fence's huge gap and proceeds to scare the shit out of everyone by almost falling off of a cliff. Rather than blaming herself for not exercising better judgement ("It was such a beautiful place and I made a stupid mistake. It will never happen again."), Charlotte Pitton shows what an awful mother she is by shirking responsibility for the incident and blaming it on the state parks of Oregon for not having proper fencing.

This summer, Lindsay and I visited all of the coastal parks of Oregon, and I was scared shitless of the cliffs. I worried about my girlfriend getting too close, I would never let my child hang out on a wooden fence.

In defense of the state parks, the scenery is incredible, and the fences in place now are plain by design, showcasing the views.

People like Charlotte Pitton need to step up and acknowledge that they messed up. Maybe then I'd respect them.

Saw this movie tonight. I can't decide if it was good or not. I think it was good.

The chase scenes and fits of paranoia are straight out of a John Grisham novel or screen adaptation--except everyone's wearing crisp, well-tailored clothes.

The music made the movie. Kristen Scott-Thomas' accent is really fantastic. She blends right in. I didn't like the characters' accents though. They sounded flat and unfrench (not the high, tight, round or throaty pronunciation that I expected). I guess it's too much to expect them to savor their vowels when they're fighting against an unknown team of brutes bent on snuffing out the truth.

It wasn't very long ago--last September to be exact--that ABC was getting slammed by angry viewers for a line delivered on Desperate Housewives.

See, Teri Hatcher's character, Susan, was in a doctor's office getting a pap smear. No, just joking. She was getting a feeding tube inserted. Nope, just joking again.

Anyways, she was in a doctor's office and said:

"Can I check those diplomas because I want to make sure that they're not from some med school in the Philippines?"

Of course Philippino medical professionals everywhere went nuts. Berserk! How dare anyone make fun of their med schools! They called it a racial slur.

In the end 30,000, people ended up signing an online petition demanding that ABC apologize. ABC made a mental image of 30,000 angry people storming their offices, so they relented and apologized.

The med students in the philippines felt better about themselves, ABC atoned for their racist ways, and millions of Americans were suddenly at ease with their foreign-trained doctors.

Flash forward nine or eight months to today, and read about a group of doctors in the Philippines who videotaped themselves boisterously laughing as they operated on a patient with a perfume bottle stuck up his ass.

Somehow the video made it onto youtube. Imagine that.

The saddest thing I've ever seen is an elderly person reaching out to touch Pope Benedict XVIJKXNXI and getting DENIED!

You couldn't see their faces, you couldn't smell their Liz Taylor perfume, but you could see the excitement in their hands.

Thousands of veiny, papery hands. Fluttering, waving, "Pick me Benedict! Pick me! PICK MEEEEE!!!"

The pope gets closer and closer.

The hands whip into a fury. But then he shuffles on. Shuffle-ball-change, shuffle-ball-change. And the grannies make one last desperate attempt to make contact with the holy. Their old hands dash up. Diagonal. To the left. At this point, they're just hoping to get a fistful of cloak. But alas, Benedict realizes it's time for his medicine and he kicks his shuffling into high gear, and really moves on.

Then the heartache. Grandma realizes that that was her last chance to touch the pope. Ever!

You could see the message from the granny brains reach their granny hands. That was it. That was their last granny-hand chance, and they blew it. There'll be no more chances to grope the holy.

CNN showed a picture of the tickets to the service. They're golden. Golden! They look a lot like the golden tickets from Willy Wonka.

Can you imagine hundreds of thousands of grannies scarffing down wonka bars in a mad hunt for tickets to see the pope?

"La Chinoise" at Northwest Film Forum

Saw Jean-Luc Godard's La Chinoise tonight. It was OK. I don't know what to make of it. It was sort of a comedy, but mostly because of it's absurdity. Deadpan delivery would be an understatement--Godard makes Wes Anderson look like Robin Williams. I liked the catchy "Mao mao" song that he used liberally (get it?) throughout the movie. Even looked it up, but couldn't find a clip anywhere. Singer was Jacques Channes.

The movie is about a small cell of Maoist students in the Nanterre suburb of Paris in the mid-960s. They play teacher with each other ad nauseaum and kick around ideas that could advanced communisim. There's no sex, they speak very slowly (super slow-mo for French) and the philosophies are confusing. There's also experimental theater.

I couldn't find the song that I was looking for. But I did find this guy. Not bad at all:

When I was boarding my Seattle-bound flight on Sunday, the boring preflight routine got a shot of excitement when a towering tiara-crowned woman got near my row. She was Miss Washington 2008 (Plus America--that means she's plus sized. offended?). People were oohing and ahhing over her. She loved. She wasn't annoying at all. She sat in the row behind me. I wanted to say hello. I actually wanted to get a picture of her for happy plate. But I was too tired to do either.

On Monday, in passing, I told my boss about Miss Washington and she laughed (hard, I might add).

So imagine my surprise today when my boss forwarded me an e-mail from Latasha Haskins a.k.a Miss Washington! Turns out that Latasha is sending press releases and somehow managed to get in touch with my boss! Crazy! Exclamation point!

So in my cab ride back to JFK, Lindsay and I made a mental list of my favorite places in New York. Not just bakeries and UES spots, but places all across Manhattan. The common theme is authenticity.

Right next to Lindsay's apartment. I can eat a whole pizza and still move. Eating their pizza makes you wonder why so few places use fresh ingredients. The mozzarella and basil make the pie.

Glazers'
Yorktown. Family bakery (at least it feels like it). Everything is old. Displays are glass and wooden. They have a special string contraption for tying cake boxes. Good black and whites. Picture-perfect store front.

Joe's Shanghai
Best dumplings ever. Really authentic. You eat family style. Awkward hellos with fellow patrons are the norm. Their fish tank is depressing. While we were waiting for our meal, I watched the hostess give her coworker a makeover. Cute. Best dumplings are straight-up pork. Lindsay goes for the crab and pork.

Joe's Dairy
Really small store. Soho? Sells homemade mozzarella. Get the lightly salted. It's always a challenge not to finish it before we get home. You feel disgusting eating it because the cheese is in a plastic bag wrapped in a paper bag and your hands and said bags are always soggy and disgusting, but it's worth it.

Lobel's
Looking at Lobel's. Never had anything from here. Don't know if I even want to. But it's really fun to look.

Il Loboratorio
LES. Gelato place. Perfectly-sized portions. Medium is best. Hazelnut is crazy. Mint was a little weak. Sorbets look good, but cream flavors are much better picks.

Doughnut plant
Best doughnut's ever. Met the owner last time. He was a nuts. I can't think of any specific flavor names. But chocolate is always great and so is the orange flavor.

The burger joint
Midtown. Perfect burger and shakes. I've done the lists (excluding the luxury burgers), and I still think this place is it. I also like the secretive nature of the place--slinging burgers from a hotel lobby.

Jacques Torres
You can watch the cocoa freaks make the product being sold in the store. Iced hot chocolate is the best. A fatty would tell you to get the one with peanut butter. I'd have to concur.

Lord Willy's
NOLITA. Nicest men's shirts in the city (that I've seen). Best umbrellas, too.
